Please Read Guidelines & Then Subscribe At   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phonolist/
.....You are invited to subscribe to one of the most active forums for communication amongst wind-up mechanical-acoustic phonograph collectors. This is a "discussion list", a format originally developed for scholarly discussion and exchange of information within a group of interested parties. Every message posted to the list address will be echoed to your email, if you opted for the default subscription mode. You may expect to receive over 10 messages a day. If this is a problem, you may elect to NOT receive emails, but to read the messages on the web-archive reader at < http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phonolist/>. There is also the option of receiving messages in digest format (one big message a day), but these are hard to use if you wish to respond. Go with the web over the digest.
.....Only list-members may post to the list, but anyone can read it on the archive. If you would like to un-join, you can do that on the web <
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phonolist/ > .....Phonolist does not yet have a "FAQ" and doesn't have any special rules, as we're basically feeling our way around, and so far our members haven't required any. Of course, we reserve the right to kick off anyone who doesn't "fit in" for whatever reason, although we haven't had to yet. Practice of standard List Netiquette is all that is asked of any subscriber. This includes things like not posting messages to the list that are better sent to a particular individual, not treating the list like it was your own private marketing list or soapbox, and a commitment to treating your fellow subscribers with respect and courtesy.
.....There has been some discussion about "quoting" messages in responses. This is usually a good idea, if you are prepared to edit out the extraneous material and make it clear which part is your response. It's also a good idea to make sure that at least part of your response appears on the first screen of your message. There are a number of techniques and you can choose whichever way helps you to communicate most clearly. Also, be mindful to describe the subject of your message in the subject line, so that others who are not interested in that subject may skip your message.
.....NO attachments, please! Especially, NO GRAPHICS!!! Every message must be re-sent by the list server to each subscriber at a cost of time and resources. If you want to give people the opportunity to see a picture, post it on a website and give the URL. For the list to work, the messages must be small enough not to impose a burden on the recipients or the server. If your mail program gives you the option to send "html", TURN IT OFF.
.....And, lastly, make sure that any messages you post are "on-topic", meaning covering the subject that subscribers expect. Off-topic messages are usually resented.
